The goal of the Meet Me at the Crossroads project was to show the progression of African American music from its roots in Gospel, to the development of Blues thru the emergence of jazz and to today’s popular music. I wanted to show the relevance of these influences in the music of today by drawing a musical roadmap if you will.
I believe jazz is, was, and will forever be the music of a struggle for freedom. I think the players who realize this fact are the ones we feel the most and connect with on a spiritual level.
For example on Still Swingin’(the opening tune)- we tell the story of how Jazz has been beaten up/changed up through the years and we end it by giving it a Gospel flavor to ‘inject’ the feeling of origin in the song. Each tune on the project was chosen with those stated goals in mind.
